Most of people involved in golf know that Japan is one of the most expensive places to play golf in the world. Some of the reasons would be that memberships are just like buying shares and stocks at market in Japan, people can buy or sell it any time they want to, and price can be at any price depends on how good or famous the golf courses are.
To buy memberships in Japan is so high that people cannot even make jokes about. The price ranges somewhere from $200,000 to few million dollars and those members still have to pay for green fee every time they play.
Secondly, the green fees are so high ($150-350 average) includes caddy fee, power cart, maintenance and usage of facility.
Thirdly, everything is expensive, land, construction fees, accessory in club house wages... everything.
However, it may be expensive to play but most of golf courses in Japan are built between mountain valley and greens are design to be at upper level which absorbs water fast and stay dry all season.
Also, most of golf courses have great club house and hotel, after a round of golf people can relax in bath with beautiful view, use gym room and so on.
So, for some people it may sound worthless, but it sure seems to work for Japanese people.
